The 2010 Guettes is the most refined and complex wine in the lineup to this point (whether or not this is a function of its malo ending a little earlier here or a reflection of the greater elegance inherent in the terroir of Guettes I am not sure!), as the wine offers up a really lovely nose of black cherries, a touch of plum, dark berries, coffee bean, woodsmoke, gamebirds, a lovely base of soil and a dollop of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a fine core of fruit, ripe tannins and a very long, focused and tangy finish. High class juice without a doubt in this vintage!

Pavelot indicated that the yields for this wine in 2010 were only 20 hl/ha. A somber and very backward nose of dark berries, cassis, plum and wet stone introduces impressively rich, cool and pure flavors that brim with dry extract before concluding in a mouth coating, long, mineral-inflected and overtly austere finish. This robust yet refined effort will need the better part of a decade to arrive at its apogee as it's very tight and firm at present. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*

Good bright, full red. Captivating, nuanced nose offers cherry, raspberry, underbrush, loam and a hint of leather. Tangy and bracing, with penetrating acidity giving precision to the youthful, juicy pomegranate and mineral flavors. Really excellent energy and fruit intensity here. Finishes with firm tannins and noteworthy length. (ST) 90+

Notes

Allen Meadows of Burghound writes: "Jean-Marc Pavelot's son Jean-Hugues told me that 2010 produced a 'very small crop but one with excellent concentration and outstanding phenolic maturity. We began picking on the 22nd of September and there wasn't much sorting necessary as the small crop and cool weather provided good aeration and poor conditions for the development of rot. The concentration came about due to the high incidence of shot berries and along with that came good potential alcohols and there was basically no chaptalization to speak of. We did our normal vinification and about the only change from what we typically experience was that the malos were significantly longer than usual. I really like the wines as they are a wonderful combination of balance and power with really lovely freshness and energy'."
