Perhaps my favorite of the Leyendas, the Montana Tamaulipas is an extremely layered, complex mezcal unlike anything I've ever tasted before. There is a loamy earthiness that confronts the nose upon introduction. Further investigation uncovers chalky minerality, black pepper, roasted herbs, subtle banana, flowers, tree bark, a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, and a spicy kick of a finish. The smoke here is admittedly rather restrained, allowing the flavors of this particularly esoteric agave varietal to show through. There's something hard to place about this one, something very compellingly bizarre and utterly unique, and I spent a long time trying to articulate it before simply succumbing to the intense expressiveness and gorgeous rusticity. If you're a collector of mezcal and can stomach the price point, do not let this one slip by.

This ridiculous plant changes from lush green to psychodelic orange and red as it matures. The extreme locality and relative sparse population of its native lands mean that this is likely the first time that this special varietal has ever been distilled. The results are absolutely mind erasing, a flavor profile unlike any spirit previously, similar to consuming the gravelly earth from which this agave matured.
