2009 Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne

This is a DP that shows the ripeness of the 2009 vintage yet remains full of energy. Gorgeous aromas of cream, apple, mango, honeysuckle, and chalk follow through to a full body and super fine, tight texture. Dense and agile. Vinous. It’s like a top grand cru white Burgundy. Think Bâtard-Montrachet. More depth than the 2006.

Generous, elegant and full of pleasure, there's lots of complexity in this curvy wine. It has a rich creaminess with minerals, chalky depth and a round mouthfeel. Flavours of cox’s apple, soy, gentle ginger spice, sweet patisserie and cappuccino are joined by a fine and persistent acidity. Profound length. (JS)

2009 was almost the perfect vintage in that nature did most of the hard work, with good ripeness (aromatic, phenolic, and potential ABV) and excellent sanitary conditions (almost no rot). It has that yellow-plum fruit of warmer vintage with enough acidity to promote freshness. Still maturing nicely and is dominated by an ensemble of toasty aromas (coffee, smoke, and walnut). Complex, chewy, and long, the wine retains its youthful, buttery fatness.

There's a subtle power to this graceful Champagne, which boasts a firm, crystalline frame of acidity married to the fine, satinlike mousse and notes of white raspberry, brioche and Earl Grey tea. Seamless through to the long finish of smoke and spice accents, this opens beautifully in the glass. *Collectible* (AN)

The 2009 Dom Perignon is one of the purest and most elegant that I have had of this famous tete de cuvee. I had an opportunity to taste a preview bottle back in March, and I was very impressed. The wine is much less yeasty than the 2006, and has rounder, riper fruit than the more mineral driven 2004. In an unusual move, but certainly a smart one, they decided to release this ahead of the 2008, which is still resting on its lees in Epernay!

Email DianaInterestingly, Dom Pérignon released this before the 2008 bottling, given the 2009's rounder profile and more easygoing spirit. After tasting both, I applaud that decision. While 2008 is the more critically-celebrated vintage, this is exceptional as well, and (perhaps more importantly!) ready to drink, with apple and golden pear fruit shining through to a long finish. While it perhaps lacks the laser sharp core of 2008, this is still bright and wonderfully focused, with a hint of leesiness. Put ‘08 in the cellar and take this out to toast now!
