2014 A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir

2014 A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir

The 2014 Oregon Pinot Noir, which comes from fruit sourced from around the state, has smudged red berry fruit on the nose that is commendably clean at this price. The palate is medium-bodied with soft red cherry and strawberry fruit, a little rough around the edges, but with good depth and length. I doubt you will find a better Pinot Noir for under twenty dollars. A to Z Wineworks is essentially the entry-label imprint for Rex Hill, established back in 2002 and now one of Oregon's largest producers. If you don't want to spend more than twenty dollars on a bottle of Oregon wine, here is a good place to begin. (NM)

Deep red. Musky cherry and red berries on the nose, backed by subtle herb and spice nuances. Tightly focused and spicy on the palate, offering bitter cherry and red currant flavors given depth by a suggestion of dark chocolate. Finishes clean, tight and quite rigid for the vintage, displaying dusty tannins and an echo of cherry pit. (JR)

Scents of wild strawberry and tar lead in this well-priced Pinot Noir. Its flavors lean toward dark cherry, accented by a whiff of caramel-scented oak, the tannins supple in the end.

Quite possibly this has the largest production of any single Oregon Pinot Noir, which makes the quality even more impressive. A bit in the vein of a Beaujolais, this offers Gamay-like flavors of red berry and wild cherry. It's broadly fruity and forward on the palate, with zippy acidity that punches through the finish. (PG)

Notes

Clear and vibrant, the 2014 A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir opens with rich primary aromas of strawberries, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, even cranberries, developing to violets, red currants, pipe tobacco, iron, and wet stone. The attack is beautifully balanced between richness and brightness with hints of roses, honeysuckle, red and blue fruit flavors. The mid-palate reveals ripe tannins and crisp acidity with a touch of minerality and spice (cinnamon, anise, saffron, sandalwood) lending greater complexity. This wine, succulent and juicy with great concentration, finishes long and rich with classic Oregon freshness. The harmony and depth of the 2014 Oregon vintage are on full display in the 2014 A to Z Wineworks Pinot Noir. Built for mid-term aging, this wine has great integrity and should drink well on release and for the next 3-5 years. Certified bio-dynamic.
