Four Pillars "Bloody Shiraz" Gin (750ml)

Four Pillars "Bloody Shiraz" Gin (750ml)

Review Date: 08/2017

This Gin has beautiful dark red color which will add a pleasant visual dimension to a gin and tonic. In the nose there is an interaction of sweet fruit and juniper aromas. In the mouth it is rich and round with the sweetness of the shiraz interacting with subtle botanical and citrus notes. The Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz is a new flavor direction in the gin section providing more depth and choice.

I was willing to buy this bottle based on the aromatics alone, well that and the fact that Four Pillars seems incapable of making a bad gin. Watching this come in and getting to finally taste it makes me do a happy dance. The aroma juniper, sweet orange, bitter herb, red berry are all present here and hint at the tastiness hiding within this bottle. The flavor here is reminiscent of a SloGin but brighter and drier than most I have tasted. The beauty of the Four Pillars botanicals are still here just surrounded and submerged in sweet red fruit, more spice and a perfect amount of sweetness. I can't wait to try it in a Negroni and I feel I won't even need the sweet vermouth.

Notes

It took a year longer than they thought it would, but after labeling conflicts with the TTB and a bit of arguing over what exactly the Bloody Shiraz gin was (a liqueur? a sloe gin?), they finally settled on "flavored" and got the darn bottles onto American soil. Perhaps the single most delicious spirit made by Four Pillars, the Bloody Shiraz is finally on our shelf and ready for you to consume it all! Four Pillars is located in Australia's Yarra Valley, one of the centers of serious wine production in the country. Every year during harvest time, the guys at Four Pillars buy clusters of whole Shiraz grapes and steep them in gin for eight weeks, then press them to release the remaining juice and alcohol that gets soaked up inside each berry and mix that elixir back into the vat. The result is a naturally sweetened, colored, and flavored gin that has the botanical burst of the standard Four Pillars expressions, but with a richness and roundness from the sweet Shiraz fruit. The sky's the limit with this bottle and it's been one of our most requested products since we first started working with Four Pillars. Try it in a gin and tonic, a Negroni, or even just with ice and soda water. You can sip it straight as an aperitif, or chill it down for an after-dinner shot. It's pretty much impossible to mess up.
