Quince and yellow plum preserves, honey and brown spices inform the nose of the auctioned 2007 Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese A.P. #12. Notes of truffle and Tokaji-like smokiness emerge with airing, emphasizing the nobly rotten side of a wine both palpably dense and almost weightlessly buoyant. Sappy plum paste and luscious yet refreshing pineapple mingle with honey and caramel on a creamy rich palate, engendering a confectionary, almost taffy-like impression, yet there is persistent invigoration and refreshment -- not to mention seduction -- in this wine’s amazingly long finish as well. I am confident (some of) you will still be awed by this in 40 years. (DS)

The 2007 auction Auslese from Egon Müller is also superb, and is one of the classic, very lightly glazed examples of botrytized Auslesen that are so captivating and seemingly plentiful in this fine vintage. The bouquet delivers a lovely potpourri of peach, guava, water cress, slate, honeycomb, incipient notes of the petrol to come in time and a lovely topnote of iris blossoms. On the palate the wine is medium-full, fresh, very long and complex, with excellent mid-palate depth, great finesse and intensity of flavor and a superb, long and racy finish. Drink between 2017-2050. 94+

(auction wine) Pale golden yellow. Aromas of candied pineapple, acacia blossom and woodsmoke waft over the brown spice botrytis. While the glossy texture is tinged with cinnamon, the creamy mirabelle fruit is driven by a vibrant citric acidity. Offers a tad more depth and length-and better balance-than the #11 Auslese. (JP)

Notes

From Mosel Fine Wines on their 2007 retrospective tasting: "95+ points. This hugely backward wine delivers a rather shy nose still marked by sulfur at first before some greengage, dried date, apricot and coconut join the party on the nose. The wine is beautifully focused and zesty with some bitter orange on the palate and a still slightly sweet-sour tension driving the hugely impressive and multi-layered finish. This still needs quite some time to develop the balance between the zesty side of a Spätlese with the almost BA presence in the finish. 2022-2047." (04/2017)
