The 2014 Timorasso Montecitorio captures all the best qualities of the Massa house style, especially the rich notes that develop with time in bottle, while retaining good freshness and nuance as well. (AG)

Montecitorio is one of Walter Massa’s three single-cru wines, planted on chalky, east-facing slopes that help to moderate ripeness and give wines with lower alcohol levels while amplifying timorasso’s naturally vigorous acidity. The 2014 Montecitorio offers scents of lime blossom and chamomile that lead into an eclectic array of flavors that include lemon tea, green apple skin, lime candy and blanched almond. A 2015 Montecitorio that Massa poured during a visit to his cantina last January was fleshier and richer, suggesting the 2014 might have been affected by the rainy summer that plagued much of Italy. After several hours of air, though, the 2014 begins to coalesce as cool acidity weaves those initially disparate flavors together. As is often the case with timorasso, this one may just need a few more years in the cellar to reveal its charm.

Vigneti Massa is one of my absolute favorite Italian vintners and I was more than excited to see not only his entry level wines in the store but his cru's as well. He's responsible for single handedly saving this wonderful grape from extinction in Piemonte. I hadn't had the pleasure of tasting the single vineyard site Timorasso's until today and they are phenomenal! The Montecitorio is fresh, clean, textured and aromatic all at once. There's a flinty mineral note, honey, honeysuckle and saline jumping out of the glass. The wine has oomph! It's got a weighty texture but the acidity is almost electric. If you can manage to keep your hands off of it, it could cellar for quite some time and would only get better with age. Fans of Chenin Blanc, unoaked Chardonnay or Alsatian Riesling should definitely give this grape a try!

Notes

Native yeasts. Maceration with skins for 60 hours. Fermentation 18-22°C. Batonnage. Light filtration. Minimum six months bottle aging before release. This easterly facing vineyard is close to 1,000 feet, planted in marl and calcareous soils.
