The 2015 Chablis Grand Cru les Clos certainly has a more expressive bouquet at the moment with citrus peel, flint and orange blossom aromas. It is beautifully defined. The palate is very well defined with tensile, almost steely tannin. It is very focused with oyster shell and a touch of lemongrass, hints of white pepper emerging towards the bravura finish that challenges Les Preuses. Ho-hum, this is yet another 2015 that rivets you to the spot courtesy of Vincent Dauvissat. "You know I am not a pessimistic person, but..." So said a beleaguered Vincent Dauvissat when we descended into his ancient cellar to taste his 2015s from barrel. Vincent has been, or rather is being hammered by the 2016 growing season with the onslaught of hail, frost, more hail and at the time of writing, intense mildew pressure as the mercury rises after a long period of rainy summer. He told me that in some areas, he has lost 95% of the crop. "It has impacted me financially. Sometimes it is difficult to sleep," he rued with the air of reflection from a winemaker who must have seen it all over many years of winemaking. And at least he has a raft of quite stupendous 2015s awaiting in barrel. (NM)

Very rich and bold, full-bodied and weighty. Superb concentration with integrated acidity and extract that dominates the fruit at present. Spicy, structured, and very long, with fine ageing potential. Drinking Window 2018 - 2032. (SB)

The Dauvissat domaine’s 2015 les Clos is an outstanding bottle in the making, but this year the les Preuses may have just nosed it out for first place in the cellar. The bouquet is young, complex and beautiful, delivering a blend of apple, pear, beeswax, chalky, flinty minerality, lemon zest and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and nicely reserved in profile, with an excellent core, bright acids, lovely energy and an impressive sense of reserve on the very, very long, snappy and extremely well-balanced finish. 2020-2050. 95.

(production was just 32 hectoliters per hectare due to the hail damage): Pure but subdued aromas of lemon and menthol; little sign of a hot vintage here. Classy and precise but youthfully imploded. Clearly quite dense but this will need time in bottle to unwind and express its inherent amplitude. Finishes sharply chiseled and long, with hints of mirabelle and humid fern. (ST)

Notes

While Vincent Dauvissat farms all of his family vineyards—and makes all of the wines—some vines are owned by different family members. Thus, some of his wines appear under the “Dauvissat-Camus” label. As noted by both Steve Tanzer and Burghound, the cuvées are identical to those appearing under the more familiar R. & V. Dauvissat label. (Alex Pross, K&L Burgundy Buyer)
