2014 Lafon-Rochet, St-Estèphe

Decanter
Review Date: 02/2024I feel like this is the kind of vintage that really suits Lafon Rochet. It sometimes does not possess the weight of some of its neighbours in richer vintages, but in 2014 it has such a lovely finesse and epitomises the more elegant side of St-Estèphe. Lovely black fruit driven nose with ethereal top notes that give it an extra dimension. This is drinking beautifully now but will continue to improve and evolve for another two decades at least. (GB)

You feel the depth compared to the smaller estates of the appellation, with powerful, chalky and textured tannins. Autumnal fruits dominante, of cassis and bilberry, earth and smoked cedar, good quality, still plenty of character to unfurl over the next five to 10 years, just a little short. Harvest October 1 to 17.

Here’s a St.-Estèphe that’s really appealing young but also has good aging potential. Great balance between crisp acidity, ripe fruit and elegant dry tannins. The finish is long and rather subtle. Hard not to drink now.

Big-hearted fruit dominates this smooth wine. The estate, owned by the Tesseron family and close to their other property of Pontet-Canet, is performing well and it shows in this juicy ripe wine, full of generous tannins. The aftertaste shows both acidity and concentration. (RV)
