What a wine - such class from the excellent 2016 vintage. A touch of meatiness to the nose with bacon, green peppers and black pepper. So expansive in the mouth while at the same time seeming a little closed or perhaps on its way to closing down. Soft tannins, fine grained giving real presence but they're well integrated. Sophisticated and broad shouldered, this has a soft attack but giving such depth on the mid palate. Bold, powerful and well presented. A classic expression of claret and the St-Julien signature characteristics of minerality, graphite, slate, wet stone and juicy blackcurrant and plum. Closer to the style of 2010, still very tannic with the chalky, mineral texture standing out. Lovely definition and concentration all while being so refined. This will age for decades. 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot. (GH)

An exceptional vintage, and an exceptional wine, punching in quality at the top of the appellation. Beginning to close down at five years old, the fingers of the tannins are closing in, but the bright succulent berry fruits are fully on display underneath and this has slate, cigar box, graphite, the full St Julien toolbox, precise but unyielding, supremely confident. 80% new oak. Harvest October 5 to 20.

Tasted on four separate occasions where this wine rated 97+, 98, 98, and 99, the 2016 Château Léoville-Poyferré is a brilliant bottle of wine and is certainly in the same league as the 2000, 2003, 2009, and 2010. Made from 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged in 80% new oak, this brilliantly concentrated, full-bodied, opulent beast of a wine offers a heavenly bouquet of crème de cassis, blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco leaf, and ample crushed rocks. It’s certainly one of the most flamboyant and opulent wines in the vintage, yet it remains perfectly balanced, with masses of polished tannins, no hard edges, and a fabulous finish. It will be drinkable in 3-4 years yet keep for 3-4 decades.

Wow. The power and depth to this wine is super with a full and fleshy palate, yet so tight and integrated with panache and energy. Chewy tannins yet seamless and melted in the wine. Extremely long and beautiful. This needs at least five to six years to resolve the steely tannins that run through this wine.

The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré has long been one of the sneaky great buys in all of Bordeaux, especially when you consider the caliber of the vintage, the undeniable terroir, and the off-the-charts quality coming from the estate. Adding ex-château provenance and sharp pricing to the mix is just icing on the cake. Léoville-Poyferré has quietly been crafting some of the finest wines on the Left Bank over the past fifteen years, beginning with their groundbreaking 100-point 2009 and 2010 vintages. The 2016 firmly belongs in that conversation—I’m hardly alone in thinking so, with many critics echoing the sentiment—which makes the current pricing all the more remarkable. Like many wines from the 2016 vintage, Léoville-Poyferré reflects both the excellence of the growing season and a key inflection point in modern Bordeaux, when precision and freshness became central focuses in both vineyard and cellar. On the palate, the fruit leans toward the deeper register typical of St-Julien, yet remains true to its site. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with cassis and black cherry dancing across the palate, while fine minerality and bright acidity lift the wine and add complexity. The texture is divine, and a long finish reveals a wine just beginning to shed its youthful edges—already harmonious, with the structure to age beautifully for years to come.

**+ More flamboyant and forward then the Las Cases and nearly as precise with a rich, creamy texture of sweet fruit and a fresh, fine finish. An almost exotic Saint-Julien with depth, structure and fruit to spare all encased in an aura of nuance.

Notes

96 points Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré has a pH of 3.66 and an IPT level of 88. It seems to have tightened up since en primeur, now offering intense blackberry, bilberry and veins of blue fruit; there’s a little gloss here but the terroir comes through. The smooth, sensual palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, very well-judged acidity and great substance and style on the finish. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most sophisticated Poyferré in recent years. 13.6% alcohol." (01/2019)
