This Islay single malt is all about the peat. Golden in the glass, the distinctly smoky scent hints at vanilla and honey underneath. Expect a big billow of smoke from the first sip, underpinned by subtle hints of honey, vanilla and sherry sweetness. The concentrated peat smoke leads right into the drying finish, plus hints of black pepper, iodine and spearmint astringency. (KN)

Laphroaig purist (something I've been accused of previously) might balk at the idea of blending young and old Laphroaig. Add a more pronounced wood influence and people could be up in arms! But, they've worked wonders here. The brain child of Laphroaig head honcho John Campbell, this special offering has tons classic Laphroaig smoke framed around this ultra approachable background of old exotic wood and old Islay whisky. It may not have the intensity of the Cask Strength, but it's got tons going on and is the perfect introduction to how smoky Islay malt ages.

Notes

Laphroaig's new Lore expression is a blend of up to 21-year-old bourbon casks, 9-year-old full-term quarter casks (whisky aged from day one), along with a few European oak sherry casks for fun. It stands out from the standard Laphroaig portfolio in a big way. It's richer, darker, more savory, and far more dense. It tastes like you're drinking a very old whisky while simultaneously taking a sip of something much younger. Unlike the bright, medicinal peat that explodes off the bat in the 10-year-old, the Lore takes you much deeper into the peat bog with more earth, more weight, and more rancio notes from the sherry cask influence. A fantastic choice for lovers of Scotch.
