As for the red wines, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (14,460 cases) from Rutherford is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It was aged 22 months in mostly French oak, although some American and Hungarian casks were utilized. Most of the fruit comes from the Beckstoffer George III vineyard as well as Hewitt’s own estate vineyard. This beauty may be the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Provenance that I have tasted to date. Loads of crème de cassis, creosote and smoky barbecue notes are followed by a wine with deep blackcurrant fruit, some black cherries, a hint of loamy soil, nice spice, and a layered, full-throttle mouthfeel. The acids are present, giving the wine energy, yet there’s a long finish and impressive purity. This is no wimpish wine either at 15.2% natural alcohol. Drink it over the next 20+ years. (RP)

Vivid aromas of black currants and blackberries. Hints of slate. Full body, fine and silky tannins

Earthy with cedar and blue floral on the nose, the 2013 Provenance perfectly showcases a more traditional Napa style with finesse and complexity. This big, dusty Cab is luxurious and dense but balanced, with silky texture, concentrated black raspberry fruit, and a subtly rustic tannic finish. I can see why it received such high scores from critics, and the price is incredible, especially for Rutherford and this special vintage.

The 2013 begins with an inky and darkly hued color which betrays its lifted and treble-y nose of blue and black fruits, cedar, sarsaparilla and underlying floral undercurrents of lilac and lavender. To say there is a lot going on in the nose would be an understatement and that complexity and intensity finds itself popping up throughout this wine. Classy on the palate with showy, lush, creamy fruits and a texture that is pure silk this is one mouth filling wine. I mean I’d pay this much for the wine four just the mouth-feel alone. But there is gobs of cassis and mocha flavors all slightly glycerin-y, maybe in just exactly the right proportions, with very varietal notes of bay leaf, sandalwood, a slight pinch of white pepper and long finishing fruit akin to freshly dried blackberries and unsweetened cocoa powder. The best part about this is that it is delicious right now and I can only see this getting better over the next 2-3 years and having a lifespan of 7-11 years without trying very hard at all.

A slam dunk California cabernet that really covers all the bases: great price, great flavors, great complexity, and great accessibility. You don't have to be an expert to appreciate the quality of the 13 Provenance. The seductive textures, the concentrated fruits, and the ease at which the wine glides over the palate will be recognizable to any lover of red wine. You could pair this with a burger, pop open a bottle for happy hour, or pour a few glasses over the course of a few days. The wine is so deliciously drinkable on its own that I could imagine people buying cases of this and enjoying it for a variety of different occasions. When you taste the Provenance, you'll get an inkling of just how good the 2013 vintage was for Napa cab. It's the best Provenance I've ever tasted.

Notes

The wines from Provenance Vineyards in Rutherford have long been on our radar here at K&L. They have consistently produced wines of the highest quality and done so for incredibly affordable prices. However, over the last couple of years, the wines were missing in action here due to some supplier issues that we don't need to get into, so when the 2013 Rutherford Cabernet bottling turned up on my desk, I was incredibly excited about the possibility of working with the brand again. Then we tasted the wine. Talk about being blown away! I can say without question that this is the best Provenance Rutherford Cabernet I've ever had. Provenance Vineyards began with the release, in the early 2000s, of the 1999 version of this Rutherford Cab. At that point in time, I was new in the wine biz and just learning the ropes. I was working at a small shop, and we tasted a ton of wine together, which really helped bring my palate along rapidly. I can still remember tasting the first vintage of this wine. Tom Rinaldi had just left Duckhorn to help start this winery, and everyone was intrigued by why he would do such a thing. He had spent over 20 years at Duckhorn and helped them build their brand from scratch. But once we tasted the wine, we knew we were in for a fun ride. Now, 15 years later or so, we are still reaping those rewards. (Bryan Brick, K&L Wine Merchants)
