2012 Dana Estates "Hershey Vineyard" Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Hershey Vineyard has developed into a round, sumptuous Howell Mountain wine with the soft contours and exceptional overall balance. Iron, sweet red cherry, plum, smoke and licorice meld together in an open-knit yet structured Cabernet Sauvignon with tons of sheer appeal. The exotic, savory/mineral bouquet is pure Howell, but there is also a softness to the 2012 that makes it incredibly appealing, even today. A final kick of Howell Mountain tannin lingers on the close. As always, the Hershey is the most vivid and structured of the Dana Cabernets. (AG)

This 2012 Hershey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is an impressive effort from this vineyard high up on Howell Mountain. This is a youthful Cabernet, but as it slowly opens, the aromas spring forth from the glass with bursts of raspberry syrup, boysenberries and fresh violets. The palate is super concentrated, adding in notes of dark cherry, a hint of balsam wood with a touch of minerality. Finish is nicely focused, yet formidable. Although this can be approached early on with extended air contact, this will age effortlessly and it would be best to allow some additional bottle age. (VM)
