The 2014 Bâtard-Montrachet chez Fontaine is more closed down than the Criots, but it displays enormous backend energy, cut and grip and probably will catch the Criots once it has had sufficient slumber in the cellar. The primary nose is deep and pure, offering up scents of apple, pear, superb, chalky soil tones, lemon blossoms and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and powerfully built, but with the great balance of the vintage very much in evidence as well, with a very, very long, primary and racy finish of outstanding potential.

The 2014 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a touch more gumption on the nose compared to the Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet with scents of citrus lemon, linden and cold granite, beautifully focused and very intense. The palate is long and tender in the mouth, certainly spicier and more extrovert than the Criot with a bravura finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is just a superb Bâtard-Montrachet from the domaine, one of the best of the vintage. (NM)

Reduced, smoky aromas of wet stone, honey, clove and menthol, with fruit in the deep background. Rich and sweet in the mouth, with fruit salad and clove flavors lifted by a minty nuance. Finishes persistent but youthfully tough. This, too, needs to be racked. A second barrel showed more pronounced smoky minerality and more finesse and length on the aftertaste. (ST)

Deep golden color, in fact so much so that I was initially concerned that this might be premoxed but in fact, no. There is good ripeness to the fully mature yet still nicely fresh nose of dried flowers, spice and yellow orchard fruit scents. Consistent with the nose, there is outstanding richness and concentration to the big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors that possess evident power and fine length on the sappy bitter lemon rind inflected finale. For my taste this has peaked though it should drink to drink well over the next decade.

Notes

From Neal Martin in the Wine Advocate: "Fontaine-Gagnard is a Chassagne domaine that has really upped the ante in recent vintages, and has provoked discussion among Burgundy cognoscenti who noticed a shift in style to ever more precise and complex expressions of respective terroirs. A large part has been due to the change in generations. Since Celine Fontaine has taken the reins, there has been a drive towards quality that is clearly tangible in the wines. Moreover, she always comes across as an intelligent, thoughtful, candid and passionate winemaker, so much so that I could quite easily sit and chat with her all day. She’s a winemaker that seems to be more “switched on” than others, considering not only the quality of her wines but also their distribution and perception beyond the confines of Burgundy. And Celine has a lot in her hands, literally as well as figuratively, what with one baby delivered and another one on the way." (12/2015)
