The entire range of 2014s from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is brilliant, but the Montrachet this year possesses that extra dimension that made this terroir so cherished a century or two ago. The celestial bouquet soars from the glass in a stunning and youthful blend of pear, a touch of fresh pineapple, iodine, complex, chalky minerality, a touch of bacon fat, gorgeous floral tones, vanillin oak and a topnote of orange zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bdoied, complex and rock solid at the core, with stunning focus and grip, electric, seamless acidity and an utterly pure, refined and magical finish. Montrachet simply does not get any better than the 2014 chez Fontaine. (Drink between 2021-2075)

The 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru is a completely different beast to the Bâtard-Montrachet. It delivers a payload of mineralité on the nose with intoxicating scents of lemon rind, limestone, white peach and a touch of walnut just brilliantly defined. The palate is extremely intense with perfectly judged acidity. This is a feisty Montrachet that is spicier than others that I have tasted in this vintage. It's a compelling wine that rivets you to the spot and it has an enormously long future. Bad news? Just one and a half barrels folks. Fontaine-Gagnard is a Chassagne domaine that has really upped the ante in recent vintages, and has provoked discussion among Burgundy cognoscenti who noticed a shift in style to ever more precise and complex expressions of respective terroirs. Aromas of pineapple, smoky oak, clove and iodine. Powerfully structured grand cru with terrific acid cut and tannic spine to support its citrus and stone fruit flavors. Finishes tactile, saline and very long. (ST)

There is a touch of matchstick character present on the overtly floral and attractively cool aromas of acacia blossom, pear, spice and an interesting hint of jasmine tea. The sleek and attractively textured medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension while exudeing a fine bead of minerality on the wonderfully long and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is a Montrachet of finesse and refinement as well as one that it nearing its peak if not quite there yet. With that said, this could be enjoyed now or cellared for another decade. Excellent.
