2001 Mayacamas Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
95
Vinous
Review Date: 10/2021The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, brooding wine. Black cherry, mocha, leather, licorice, spice, earthiness and tobacco build in a somber mountain Cabernet endowed with tons of energy and virile intensity. I suspect the tannins will always be a bit burly, but readers can look forward to another decade of rewarding drinking. (AG)

Notes
Originally built in 1889, Mayacamas is one of the Napa Valley’s oldest wineries. A long road winds up Mount Veeder to the historic stone winery and its estate vineyards, located at elevations between 1,800 and 2,400 feet above sea level. Previously owned by the family (from 1968 to 2013), the winery has been known for making lean, balanced, long-aging wines. Many vintages need a decade or more of cellaring to really find their greatness. These wines bring one back to the old days of California wine, when wines were allowed to age gracefully and develop in the bottle.
