The 2005 Le Defi de Fontenil was fermented in oak vats. Deep garnet in color, it sashays out with opulent scents of incense, Chinese five spice, dried lavender, and iron ore with a core of plum preserves, star anise, charcoal, and dried mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is fantastically graceful and well-preserved, with loads of savory, mineral, and exotic spice accents to the black fruit preserves flavors, framed by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and earthy. The classic 2005 Château Fontenil is terrific, and this is a wine that has always offered incredible pleasure. Rich currant and darker cherry fruits, some truffly earth, spice, and chocolate nuances, medium to full-bodied richness, and ripe, polished tannins define this outstanding Fronsac that’s drinking at point today. It should continue evolving gracefully over the coming 7-8 years.

From the home estate of Dany and Michel Rolland, the 2005 Fontenil has an opaque, thick ruby/purple color. Dense plum, black cherry, blackberry and cassis fruit jump from the glass of this full-bodied, terrific Fronsac, which is one of the appellation’s stars of the vintage. Long, rich, young, and capable of lasting another 15-20 years, this is one of the candidates for Wine of the Vintage in Fronsac. This wine actually needs another several years of bottle age. (RP)

The 2005 Fontenil is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Crème de cassis, chocolate, new leather, licorice, cloves and lavender all meld together effortlessly. The 2005 has aged gracefully and is peaking today. As always, Fontenil is a creamy, sumptuous Fronsac, but time has mellowed some of its youthful exuberance. What a gorgeous wine it is. (AG)

Fontenil has Michel Rolland as its owner and winemaker, and delivers a very high quality Fronsac. Offering a charming nose of cocoa-covered cherries along with earthy notes, it’s a medium to full-bodied wine, with dark chocolate and cherries on its tannic palate. It needs a bit of decanting to showcase all of its appeal. It is showing a nice development now, which suggests it is a good candidate for the near term.

Notes

This wine is a fantastic value for near-term enjoyment. Tons of black fruit flavors and toasty oak nuances.
