This is stunning. The bouquet is beautifully perfumed, displaying blue/blackberry, floral, game and spice notes with elegantly infused cedary oak. It's concentrated, succulent and supple on the palate with velvety texture, finishing extremely long, backed by plenty of cushioned tannins. A young beauty showing excellent harmony and integration, making it so approachable now but will no doubt age with grace.

Few wines manage to be rich (big, mouth-filling and mellow) and vibrant (tangy, bright, fresh and full of energy) but Craggy Range Syrah somehow manages it. The result is a Syrah that's choc-full of ripe berry flavours and shot through with tangy spices. It's big, quite complex and very satisfying.

97% 'Heritage' clone Syrah with 3% Viognier, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.4% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 25% new French oak barriques. Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, bright and youthful in appearance. This has a very fine, soft and penetrating bouquet combining fresh black berry and peppery fruit, lifted with violetty floral elements, and spiced with liquorice and toasty oak char and nuances of bacon. Medium-bodied and elegantly proportioned, bright black berry fruits with black pepper and Asian spice flavours show excellent depth. Apricot and floral notes show with fresh acidity, and the palate is underscored by very fine tannins that provide a dry and refined mouthfeel. This has a very long finely textured finish.

Polished and powerful, with lively blackberry and huckleberry flavors, featuring precise, detailed nuances of fig paste, white pepper, crushed rock and violet. The polished tannins and long finish give this extra depth. (MW)

An incredible bottle of Syrah! A screaming "Cyber Monday" price...well, actually it's the "as long as it lasts" K&L price at 50% off the winery's SRP! Thanks to our great relationship with Craggy Range we are able to offer this exclusive deal. The wine is classic Syrah--dark, floral, earthy tones; spice, black pepper; deep and brooding. Lots of concentrated berry fruits, whiffs of smoke, bacon fat and stony minerals. Exceptional wine that has just started to develop some beautiful complexity from a few years in the bottle. This is WAY too good for this price.

Notes

I can't believe we got this deal on Craggy Range's Gimblett Gravels Syrah! Our K&L exclusive pricing is almost 50% off the wine's regular price... and look at the huge scores! This wine is from the rockiest parcel of Craggy's Gimblett Gravels Vineyard known as "Block 14." The vines here produce particularly concentrated flavors and rich, powerful wines. This is very much "Old World" Syrah with a dash of more modern fruit purity and polish. The aromatics are violets, toasted spices, cracked peppercorns, black and blue fruits, charred steak and lovely exotic French oak hints. The wine is long and powerful on the palate but has fresh, vibrant acidity and lovely elegance to counterbalance the forward fruit. Flavors echo the nose, long and lingering right through the finely tuned finish. This wine is so intriguing and really develops in the glass, fascinating stuff. The few years in the bottle have only improved this wine and I have no doubt it will drink well for another 10 years into the future. This is a one-time only deal not to be missed from one of New Zealand's premier producers. (Ryan Woodhouse, K&L NZ Wine Buyer)
