2013 Domaine Saint Prefert "Classique" Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Review Date: 04/2015Vivid ruby-red. High-pitched, mineral-tinged aromas of fresh red berries and flowers, in a style that's strongly reminiscent of a ripe-year Burgundy. Shows very good clarity and lift on the palate, with sweet raspberry and rose pastille flavors sharpened by a jolt of blood orange. This supple, open-knit wine is firmed on the back by smooth tannins and should be delicious right out of the gate.

The straight 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape is a superb effort in the vintage. Strawberry, black raspberry, bubble gum and spring flowers are just some of the aromas here, and it has a non-2013 level of depth and richness on the palate. Give it a year or three once released and drink it through 2023.
Easily one of my favorite estates, Saint Prefert is run by the talented Isabel Ferrando, who studied winemaking in Gigondas before releasing her first vintage from Châteauneuf du Pape in 2003. Since then, it’s been one superb release after another. For additional information on the estate, readers should check out the recent retrospective from this estate in Issue 214.
