A new cuvee, the 2012 Baron Louis Lirac is a gorgeous Lirac that has pretty black raspberry, spice and floral aromatics, medium-bodied richness and an overall elegant, polished and layered style. It's a serious wine that will have 8-10 years of longevity. (JD)

Offers a lush, flattering feel, with velvety raspberry and plum sauce flavors gliding along, carried by twinges of anise, fruitcake and singed cinnamon stick. Fresh acidity lets everything meld on the finish. Drink now through 2017. (JM)

Bright ruby. Highly perfumed raspberry, cherry and licorice pastille aromas show good clarity and pick up a peppery nuance with air. Juicy, gently sweet and focused, offering energetic red and dark berry flavors that show no rough edges. Pliant and subtly smoky on the penetrating finish, which echoes the red fruit and licorice notes. (JR)

We just got more of this back in stock and man is this developing beautifully. The vintage is classically structured, showing a subtle perfume of blackberries, figs and dried rose petals. The wine has fine tannins and is perfectly balanced. Another classic Rhone wine from our friends at Montfaucon!

This Chateauneuf-du-Pape wannabe comes from 50-to-90 year old vines and could go head to toe against any $50.00 wine from anywhere in the world in my opinion. This is dark and spicy with deep blue and black fruit, a touch of earth and very fine, ripe embedded tannins imparting wonderful structure. The proportion, balance and overall harmony make for a wine that is drinkable now but will improve for up to a decade in a cool cellar.

The Baron Louis Lirac is a nice example of what great wine making is about; supple, smooth tannin structure accompanying the lush, dark berry flavors of Grenache, rounded out artfully with small portions of Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvedre. The balance and structure deserve commendation, and make the Baron Louis a great example of what Rhone Valley wines are capable of. It’s an absolute pleasure to drink and will be for many years.

Notes

An 88-acre estate, Château de Montfaucon sits just across the Rhône River from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe. Over the years, Château de Montfaucon has developed a HUGE following among both our staff and customers. Who is the Baron Louis? A seminal figure in the history of Montfaucon, he was responsible for restoring the Château of Montfaucon, saving it from complete ruin at the close of the 19th century. This latest release is produced from 50-to-90-year-old vines on select vineyard parcels. This substantial yet elegant red can be enjoyed now, but it will be superb with several years more of cellar time. Try it with heartier fare like sirloin steaks dusted with fresh herbs.
