Fabulous floral aromas of currants, flowers, stones and rosemary stem. Purity. Full body with a fabulous backbone of chewy tannins with a gorgeous austerity. Elegance with power.

Decanter

Extremely fragrant at the cork's pull with gorgeous minty notes that turn to tobacco and bacon fat, currants, cigar box, and toasty cedar wood. You immediately notice this suppleness in the tannins, which have a billowy texture and give an incredible lift to the mid-palate. There is a vivid mineral richness of ironstone that lingers. A lovely curranty sweetness begins to envelop the palate, and the tannins turn almost powdery, still very fine, but powdery and billowy all at once. This wine is in a great place. It's a wine to drink now. Pull the cork and don't decant it, but swirl it around in your glass and taste it with each passing minute as it develops nuance after nuance. Readers may also wish to reference my review of 2011 BOND Quella, as I get into extravagant detail about the cold, rainy, foggy growing season. I tasted the 2011 BOND wines with Cory Empting and Will Harlan in February of 2024, and the wines were just remarkable. (JC)

Deep garnet in color, the 2011 Harlan Estate trots confidently out of the glass with scents of blackberry pie, mulberries, and redcurrant jelly giving way to nuances of sandalwood, bay leaves, dried lavender, and graphite. The medium to full-bodied palate is still very youthful, with plenty of emerging tertiary baking spice flavors and a lightly chewy texture, finishing with a lively mineral lift. (LPB)

Vinous

The 2011 Harlan Estate is a real stunner. Still fresh and vibrant, the 2011 is a magically beautiful wine. It is, naturally, more small-scaled. Crushed flowers, sweet red dry fruit, tobacco, cedar and mint notes are super classy. It's fabulous achievement. (AG)

Notes

97 points Matthew Luczy for Decanter: "Damp earth, dried cassis and charcoal ember aromas. Immaculate balance on the palate, with deep, concentrated dark fruits that stop just shy of opulence. The rusticity of the vintage peers through this density, with flavours of dried sage and roasted plum. Charred, smoldering and brooding on the finish. As always with Harlan Estate, this is a wine of relative restraint and long-term focus, not a smashing powerhouse. Just beginning the second phase of what should be a long life." (2/2021)
