2004 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Burghound
Review Date: 01/2007An expressive and relatively high-toned red berry fruit nose mixed with underbrush, earth, iron and subtle spice notes introduces very rich, sweet, intense and sappy flavors that deliver impressive volume and a particularly seductive mouth feel as there is a velvety quality to the beautifully long and balanced finish. This will require at least a decade to realize the excellent potential.

The 2004 Griotte from Jean-Marie Ponsot is yet again another very fresh and pure example of the vintage, with little signs of the pepperiness of so many other 2004s. The bouquet is deep and excellent, as it offers up scents of cherries, orange zest, sous bois, coffee, incipient notes of grilled meats and lovely, esthery topnotes of mustard seed and Gevrey spices. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and beautifully complex, with lovely mid-palate depth, moderate tannins and excellent focus and grip on the transparent, poised and very long finish. A very, very classy ’04. 92+

Good full red. Sappy, very showy aromas of red cherry, faded rose, meat, dried herbs and smoke. Fat, dense, broad and sweet, with expressive flavors of red cherry, spices and dried herbs. Very rich, long wine, finishing with a fine dusting of tannins and a lingering aromatic quality.
