Very strong mousse Idiosyncratic nose of yellow fruits, minerals, ginger, honey, lily and magnolia; like a grand cru white Burgundy. Very intensely flavored but subtle and light on its feet. A vivid wine with great vinosity and penetration. Strong acids give it a brisk, firm-edged finish...

Wonderful vinosity and expression of [i]terroir[n] highlight this powerful, intense Champagne. Dried red fruits, dried citrus peel and spice notes are buoyed on its broad frame. It has presence without being overbearing, exuberantly hoisting you in the air, but letting you down gently with the rich, biscuity finish. Better now with an additional two years of aging. Drink now through 2020.

Notes

The Clos du Goisses is the top of the line wine from Philliponnat, and one of only four walled vineyard bottlings that I know of. The other three are Krug's Clos de Mesnil, Cattier's Clos du Moulin and Bollingers Ay Villes Vignes- a very august group! It comes from a thirteen and three quarter acre vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Ay, which faces due south onto the Marne River from one of the steepest slopes of the Mountain of Reims. The vineyard is so steep that when you drive by it there is always dirt in the road below it. It simply rolls down the vineyard and falls down the wall. It is planted to 70% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay.- Gary Westby, K&L
