Sugarloaf is a cooler site in south Napa, above a quarry. It usually allows for a longer hang time, often lending a minty or herbal lift to this label. The deep garnet-purple colored 2012 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Deep garnet colored, it offers up notes of fruitcake, exotic spices, prunes, black truffles and Morello cherries with hints of garrigue, tilled earth and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a firm foundation of ripe, grainy, tannins supporting the bright, vibrant fruit, finishing long and with a minty lift. (LPB)

The Bevan Cellars Sugarloaf Mountain Proprietary Red is an exceptional effort from Russell Bevan in 2012. It is a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot which immediately opens up with seductive aromas of ripe dark fruits, cassis, anise, mocha, sweet spices, violets, toasted notes and a lovely underlying mineral character. This rich, full-bodied, voluptuous red is impressive for its incredible depth and concentration, yet it remains in balance al the way through the plush, layered finish. A completely compelling wine that is not only absolutely delicious, but capable of lasting decades as well. (JD)

Savory herbs, smoke, tobacco, menthol, graphite, red cherries and plums blossom in a powerful, intense wine that grips all the senses and never lets up.
