Glenfarclas "The Faultline Casks" K&L Exclusive First Fill Oloroso Sherry Casks Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

Review Date: 05/2015

My favorite malt of the year, this is one scintillating Scotch. I could not believe the depth of flavor, that pure Oloroso richness, but it wasn't sweet it was just that the intensity was so profoundly deep. Texturally this malt is really concentrated but never in an over the top mode it’s just full to the brim it reminds me of the oiliness that smoky Islay malt gets where there’s just such concentration not aromatically as much as on the palate, in smoky malts this character is measured in PPM, Phenol Parts per Million, this malt is all about Oloroso, that wild, sweetish allusion that is just flavor concentrated. If you like Macallan styled malts, you better stock up on this, they wish they could be this good for the price!

This should come with some kind of warning..."Dangerously drinkable"..."Caution: contents will disappear quicker than intended"..."Drinking this bottle will impair your ability to judge other releases fairly". It's seriously that good. Rich, soft, full of flavor and texturally enticing and just an out-and-out "crowd pleaser." You can search high and low and you won't find a better holiday gift than this bottle. It has brand recognition, it's limited edition, it's cask strength(ish) at 57% alc...and it tastes great!

Joyful deliciousness in a glass. There is a beautiful deep brown color with sweet, inviting aromas. It is fantastic and round but not too sweet. There is enough complexity to make this single malt very interesting.

The Faultline Casks expression is deceptive in that the 57% alcohol overpowers the sherry at first, to the point that you get mostly malt and grain. With water, the magical flavors are immediately unlocked and all the Christmas cake and fudge begin oozing out of their hiding place. Super fun stuff and very holiday-oriented. What I love most about this, and our other Glenfarclas expression, is that there aren't many whiskies on the market that taste like this. It's a big, explosive flavor that isn't just dark sherry sweetness and oversaturation. It's still a very balanced whisky.

Notes

When George Grant offered us the opportunity to take multiple casks for a special exclusive bottling, we were over the moon. The creative juices began flowing. We talked about doing an ultra-aged expression, but we didn't feel we could match the outrageous cask from the 1970 vintage, which we'd acquired a couple of years back. Instead, we decided to focus on a NAS (no age statement) mixture of casks from earlier vintages. The goal was to create a high proof, heavily sherried 'Farclas that we could sell for around $100. After tasting multiple vintages from 8 to 15 years of age, we settled on three of our favorite casks in the 9-10 year range. At no other distillery is vintage so important and the importance of their vessel was clear when tasting these younger expressions. We've ended up with a mixture of young casks that surpass even our own high expectations. This is full fledged and powerful, yet tempered by the strong influence of that special wine of Andalucía. If you love sherry, if you love high proof single malt, if you love powerful flavors and massively textural whisky, then this bottling is for you. Even better, if you love not spending a ton for a bespoke offering from one of the world's best distilleries, don't wait to order. We'll have more than the standard single barrel, but this bottling is still highly limited.
