The hands on crafting of this one-man-show Champagne producer comes through beautifully in this fantastic value bottle. This is composed of a third each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier from Mr. Le Brun’s estate, and nearly every wine in this blend has gone through malolactic. This Champagne has a rich bready nose from the over 36 months it has aged on the lees and some very nice savory qualities as well. In the mouth the high quality Meunier gives this wine great roundness as well as some tasty baked apple flavors. The cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir show their stuff on the dry, long finish. It is dosed at 6g/l.

Grower-producer Alexandre Le Brun 's "Tradition," continues to be one of our most customer-requested champagnes. The Tradition is so named because it's a traditional blend of all three noble champagne grapes - 1/3 Chardonnay, 1/3 Pinot Noir, and 1/3 Meunier. Like Bollinger, it's barrel fermented with a touch of new oak. Like Billecart-Salmon, it undergoes a long cold temperature fermentation. How long? Well, most fermentations in champagne take a week. Alexandre's can take months, adding aromatics, complexity, and stability (that helps aging). Like a vintage champagne, it's aged for three years on the lees, giving it wonderful creamy fresh bread and biscuity notes. This is a full-bodied champagne that will handle heaver food pairings than champagnes more suited as an aperitif. I can't rave about the Tradition!

A great Champagne from a small producer. The Le Brun Tradition is full-bodied and round, with a subtle richness. There is a hint of toast and this Champagne is dry. Great alone, it will also go well with chicken or pork. A small scale hands on producer that is well worth the price.

Alexandre Le Brun, a 9th generation winemaker, has created another gem of a bubbly. Due to its low dosage, minerals jump out of the glass on the nose. Newest release shows a touch of butter, stone fruits, apricot and oak spice. Main flavors are golden apple and roasted nuts, with light savory spice. Wonderfully delicious! On the palate, it comes across more fully with rich yellow fruits and bright red cherries. The fullness of the palate is balanced very well by the long finish, which has lingering acidity and minerality. I buy magnums, when they are available!

Notes

At just 7.5 acres, Alexandre Le Brun is the smallest producer from Champagne that we import, or even carry. He only makes wine from half of the grapes he brings in, selling the rest off to négociants. His production is just 1,000 cases a year, total. This tiny scale allows Alex to do nearly everything himself and his hands-on approach shows through in the finished product. He only uses his own estate fruit for his Champagne, and, although small, it is diverse. He farms 22 plots in eight different villages. Among these are some of the oldest vines in Champagne, as the Meunier vines of Vignes l’Etoges in Monthelon were planted in 1902, making them now 122 years old.
