Wine Advocate

Review Date: 12/2002

One of the greatest wines ever produced ... anywhere ... is the 1990. Having consistently merited 100 points (if my scoring system went higher, it would be there), it continues to perform like a young wine, yet is accessible enough to be appreciated for its extraordinary combination of power, complexity, and majestic layers of flavor. The color is a dark plum/ruby to the edge. The monumental bouquet offers up aromas of liquified charcoaled beef intermixed with pepper, smoke, creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, truffles, and new saddle leather. This full-bodied, viscous, prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape must be tasted to be believed. It is more like a food than a beverage. (RP)

It's fully mature now, and starting to dry out just a little, but still has good colour and some fresh fruit on the palate. Mostly soy, star anise, some leaf mulch now, as the fruit falls away. Lovely acidity, and still tannic (not the finest tannins) on the finish. A great wine at the end of its life, but still with an elemental force within. (MW)

Dark crimson. Rich and spicy with some peppery notes as though there were quite a bit of Syrah in here?? Still amazingly youthful. Indeed it seemed even more youthful in 2009 than it had done nine years earlier. Atypical for a Châteauneuf somehow, though not unlike a light port. 18/20 points (JR)
