*Sweet spot Outstanding* Moderate reduction dominates the nose to the point where the fruit is masked. There is good freshness and energy though to the strongly mineral-inflected and beautifully well-detailed medium-weight plus flavors that are presently austere and quite right on the otherwise impressively long finish. This old school and very serious effort is quite firm though stops short of overt rusticity. Drink: 2024+

The 2009 Pommard Les Rugiens (from Rugiens-Hauts) comes across as a touch airy but super-refined. Silky tannins support an energetic core of fruit through to the pointed, focused finish. The 2009 is impressive for its drive and insistence. (AG)

Bright, deep red. Full-blown, rather sauvage aromas of raspberry, chocolate, mocha, iron and underbrush ("reminds me of the 2010 Bonnes-Mares," says Boillot), but fresh for all its ripeness. Lush, shockingly ripe and deep on the palate, conveying a powerful impression of Rugiens soil allied with the fleshiness of the vintage. A distinctly soil-driven 2009, yet quite different in style from the rounder 2010. Finishes with powerful, dusty, mounting tannins that call for at least several years of bottle aging. 93+ (ST)

Notes

93-95 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "The Rugiens has a taut bouquet with red cherries, redcurrant, crushed stone and just a touch of black truffle: complex, but taking time to unwind in the glass. The palate is very well balanced on the entry, tart cherries at first that segue into crisp cranberry and raspberry fruit. Very good structure, firm but insistent grip with a long, satisfying finish. Excellent. Tasted January 2011."
