Focusing on old vines, the 2011 Chardonnay Old Guard is Chablis-like with it green-tinged color, searing oyster shell-like minerality, citrus blossom and lime aromas and flavors. It, too, is laser-focused on the palate and needs another year or two to unwind. Incredibly impressive, few wines show this level of tension and energy. These awesome wines are made by Matt Dees and the Jonata team and are named after the idea that the wines are farmed to “The Hilt.” Sourced from Sanford & Benedict, Solomon Hills and Bien Nacido vineyards, they were some of the most impressive efforts I was able to taste during my time spent in Santa Barbara County. Vinous

A fascinating contrast to the Vanguard, the 2011 Chardonnay Old Guard is much more airy, precise and delicate. Hints of lemon, pastry and white stone fruits all flow in a Chardonnay that stands out for its pure class and personality. Bright, saline-infused notes support the finish. This is a first-class showing. The 2011 was aged 68% in neutral oak and 32% in steel, with partial malolactic fermentation (25%) and weekly batonnage. (AG)

(made with fruit grown in the Sanford & Benedict and Solomon Hills vineyards; 80% new oak): Light gold. Expansive aromas of poached pear, Meyer lemon, anise and vanilla, with a bright minerally topnote. Deep, sappy and penetrating, showing very good density combined with energy. The lively, precise finish echoes the mineral note and hangs on with strong, spicy tenacity. (JR)
