Reviewed July 2006The 2005 Hermannshöhle Auslese is another profound young bottle, with even more depth than the Brücke, and also a bit more obvious structural impediments to immediate drinkability. The stunning bouquet blazes away in blend of white cherries, lychee, pulverized stones and spring flowers. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and intense, with a bit more obvious botrytis adding sizzle on the attack, and then the minerality taking over from the mid-palate back on this very, very long and profound finish.

A captivating nose of minerals, wax, lanolin and melted candle wax. The palate is different to the nose: much more fruit-driven with apple, white peach, orange zest with good acidity. Almost viscous in texture, but all the time with exquisite balance and poise with good weight on the finish. This will only get better. (NM)
