Mezcal Vago is the business creation of Judah Kuper in conjunction with his in-laws in Oaxaca: a family of distillers that has been making mezcal for generations. Vago marks the first time their products have been available commercially, having previously been consumed solely by friends and family. This stupendous Arroqueno is distilled in clay pots by Judah's Uncle, Salomon Rey Rodriguez in the nearby (6 hours by truck) town of Sola de Vega. Using the exceptionally time consuming method of hand mashing, Tio Rey uses century old fermentation vats carved from one single tree trunk. The Arroqueno throws wonderful aromas of spiced tropical fruit, smoky meats, and fresh earth. This is an absolutely fabulous example of this special and rare varietal.
