Reviewed June 2012More deep, rich, and structured, yet also still holding onto a sense of balance and elegance, the knockout 2009 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel Panoplie (65% Mourvèdre, 26% Grenache, 9% Syrah) shows a similar meatiness that can be found in the Esprit de Beaucastel, yet carries a darker fruit profile with loads of blackberry styled fruit, licorice, earth, and hints flowers all emerging from the glass. This is followed up by a powerful, rich wine that has an energetic, vibrant texture, fantastic concentration, and a chewy, structured finish. There’s certainly loads of structure here, yet given the balance and overall harmony, it’s still a brilliant drink now. 96+

The 2009 Esprit de Beaucastel Panoplie is even better than the straight Esprit, and is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. Today, the Panoplie comes across as very young. Dark cherries, flowers, mint, licorice and tobacco are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass, but ultimately the 2009 is a very primary wine still built on fruit. The 2009 boasts so much pure density that the tannins appear to be nearly buried, but they are there. This is a decidedly huge, dramatic wine from Tablas Creek. The blend is 65% Mourvèdre, 26% Grenache and 9% Syrah. (AG)

Pale to medium ruby-garnet, the 2009 Panoplie is a blend of 65% Mourvedre, 26% Grenache and 9% Syrah with scents of baked red and black cherry, peppercorn, old leather, dusty earth and dried herbs with cocoa powder, mushroom, orange peel and amaro hints. Light to medium-bodied, it's still kicking, with some dried fruits and plenty of savory accents, framed by firm, grainy tannins and good freshness and finishing long and nuanced. This is drinking wonderfully now but can go a bit further. (EB)

95 points, Josh Reynolds for Vinous: " Deep ruby with a bright rim. Floral- and spice-accented aromas of red and dark berries, incense and minerals expand with aeration, picking up a smoky quality. Impressively fresh and pure on the palate, with excellent depth to its sweet raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors. Finishes sappy and nervy, with lively notes of candied flowers and star anise. Has the balance to age, but this is also flat-out delicious right now." (12/2011)
