Undoubtedly, Ragnaud Sabourin sets the standard for Grand Champagne Cognac production. Nestled in the prime belt of Grand Champagne, this small estate produces Ugni and Folle Blanche, which contribute to some of the industry's most prestigious cognacs. My understanding of what set Grand Champagne apart and the role of additives in great Cognac's elevage lacked depth prior to visiting this illustrious estate. On the industrial scale, I grasped that cognac demanded additives for consistency across large quantities of young brandy, but the practice at a high-quality estate puzzled me. However, after learning about the exact components of their "boisé," I now appreciate the process. Far from being a shortcut, the creation of this additive involves crafting an "oak extract" from incredibly old, under-proof cognacs. So, if the additives used are essentially 80+ year-old cognacs that can no longer be bottled due to their proof, I am entirely on board with it. This blend essentially ages 35 years but includes much older eau-de-vie. Contrary to expectations, the nose is vibrant, presenting a beautifully seasoned bouquet: citrus peel flambeed, cocoa butter, and stewed stone fruits, like Mirabelle and nectarine. On the palate, it's forgiving and rounded, brimming with wild honey, orange blossom, and sprinkled with cloves and cinnamon spice. This blend captures the essence of what superior cognac should taste like - truly delicious.

We've been on a serious brandy kick here lately in the spirits department. But for many years now the return of Ragnaud Sabourin at K&L has been a highlight every year when the first French spirits container hits our stores. It's almost criminal to compare this to anything else available on the market. When you do, you realize the prices being charged by the big Cognac houses are what is criminal. This is 35+ year old Grande Champagne Cognac for substantially less than $200. When you consider something like XO from a big house is easily 200 bucks, not all Grande Champagne fruit, heavy with sugar/caramel coloring, and just brushes past the 10 year mark (XO's legal minimum) with dollops of older spirit, it's laughable. This single estate in Fontvieille makes the most compelling Cognac available. Specs aside, the Cognac itself — it's sublime. The aromatics feel like fresh and baked apples have been drizzled with brown sugar and baking spices and held together with tons of brioche. It's livelier than any 35 year old spirit has a right to be. The oak is so beautifully integrated and balanced. The texture is supple and velvety. It's easily the best Cognac we have to offer at any price.

More power and brooding than the No20 bottling we got from Ragnaud-Sabourin, this is still a beautiful Cognac and a lot of fun to sip. Fresh and dried fruits mix and melt together. Syrupy cherries, plum, mixed berries, and peach swirl with allspice and cardamom. Heavier on the palate, the oak spice comes through with caramels and denser fruit to create pie-like flavors. Spice, caramel, and polished wood combine in a very long finish.

There are beautiful inviting aromas that are floral, rich and pretty. In the mouth the #35 is lush and round, a Cognac full of concentrated pleasure. A nice long finish tops off the experience.

Notes

The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grande Champagne, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc, with a bit of Folle Blanche, as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods, and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. The collection of Ragnaud-Sabourin selections we tasted were spellbinding and easily one of the most polished portfolios we've ever come across. The No. 35 is a 35-year-old Cognac of immense quality and seamless character. It's named after a special property (Fontevielle) from which the fruit is sourced. Locals in the area say: "the Cognac is perfect," and we couldn't agree more. It's rich, supple-fruited, and textural, almost luxuriously so, and the caramel comes in on the finish to warm your mouth. It goes on forever. It's easy to say that this is the one of the best Cognacs we've ever tasted and it should make many aficionados very happy. All it takes is one sip to realize why Ragnaud-Sabourin is widely respected throughout Grande Champagne. We couldn't be more pleased to represent them here stateside.
