Wine Advocate
Review Date: 06/2001The outstanding medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Beaune Les Epenottes is crammed with sweet raspberries, cherries, and candied strawberries. Medium to full-bodied and satin-textured, this is a spicy wine filled with copious quantities of candied cherries and jammy blackberries. It is pure, seamless, powerful, and possesses an admirably long, silky finish.

Saturated medium ruby. Explosively spicy aromas of blackberry, pepper and smoked meat. Less fruity in the mouth than the Clos du Roi; more rustic and more complex, in a Pommard style. Rich and dense but austere, thanks to its firm acidity. Finishes with a note of tarry oak and substantial chewy tannins that will require at least a few years of bottle aging. 'An autumn wine, a mushroom wine,' says Boillot. 90(+?) points.
