The bouquet features smells of new car leather, breakfast cereal, cornmeal, pepper and hemp. Entry is nicely sweet and intensely grainy; the mid-palate is the high point as the taste profile expands to include semisweet flavors of caramel corn, toasted marshmallow, dried fruit and chocolate covered cherry. Concludes oaky sweet and chewy. *Superb, Highly Rated*

One of the few remaining age-stated bourbons. Henry McKenna’s color is beautiful. You can hold it up in sunset light and just enjoy the russet and amber hues reflecting. Sweetness, savory, and floral fragrances followed by brown sugar, fresh-baked rye bread, and malt. Caramel and vanilla, with roasted pine nuts and spice, and a slight hint of strawberry lead to a long and savory finish. Balance is the point of this sipper. (FM, Summer 2016)

The Mckenna was one of those sleeper bourbons that we all hoped nobody finds out about. Age stated 10 year old bottled in bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon is simply not being sold by anyone else. There's absolutely nothing out there that can claim those stats even at higher prices. And you know what, it's SINGLE BARREL as well. So checking almost every geeky bourbon box. But ultimately this is just one of the very finest drinkers in the shop. While it doesn't have the smack you around power of its sibling the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, it offers so much supple and sumptuous sipping that it should be considered up there with Blanton's, Russell's and Four Roses as one of one of the pillars of single barrel goodness.

It seems so crazy that we can even keep this bourbon in stock given its quality and 10 year age statement. It tastes great, checks all the boxes, good richness, texture, lots of toasty spice, caramel, charred oak tones. So what's up...? Too inexpensive...not "cool" enough yet...? Fine by me, this is a steal for people who care more about what's in the bottle and enjoying a good drink rather than those seeking only collectibles. Cheers to you!

Notes

You know it, you love it. It's ten years old, bottled-in-bond, single cask, 100-proof, old-school Kentucky bourbon from Heaven Hill and an incredible product by any measure. Henry McKenna brought his family’s whiskey recipe with him from Ireland in 1837 and settled in Fairfield Kentucky, founding his distillery there in 1855. He soon adapted his techniques to the local Kentucky grains, particularly corn, and began producing what became known as "Kentucky’s Finest Table Whiskey." To this day, Henry McKenna Bourbon honors that heritage with a Bourbon that can be served with pride and poured without pretension.
