This is one of the vintages from Cos that seems to pull out all the stops. The fruit is so rich, the texture so dense, and deep flavors of chocolate back up the huge structure. It does work in its magnificent, flamboyant way. And at the end, the acidity does its part and gives the wine a final lift. Drink from 2024. (RV)

At ten years of age this possesses a beautiful fragrance, with scents of dried dark red cherry, rose petal, tobacco, crushed chalk and violets just leaping from the glass. Going back in for a second look, there are touches of currant, tar, liquorice and vanilla pod, in what is a delightfully complex yet also pure aromatic profile. The palate builds on this impressive beginning with a construct of pure harmony and freshness, with textural confidence, layers of supple and savoury fruits, a silky integration of substance and structure, with just a gentle grip from the tannins. It finishes long and smoky. This is very convincing and certainly gave me reason to pause as I worked my way through this line-up of 2012s. Top work.

Notes

"Proprietor Michel Reybier has produced an outstanding 2012 Cos d’Estournel from a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and the rest tiny quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot," notes Robert Parker in Wine Advocate. "With a pH of 3.75 and alcohol level of 13.8% this is a ripe wine with the same tannin levels (IPH) as the 2009." (04/2013)
