Tasted no fewer than three times (rated 99 once and 98 two other times) and up there with, and probably eclipsing, the ‘07, the 2010 Cuvée Chaupin is a spectacular blend of 100% Grenache that is from a cooler terroir in the northwest part of the appellation. Seeming like the essence of Grenache, it offers up an extraordinary perfume of black raspberry, spring flowers, licorice, and roasted meat-like qualities on the nose. This is followed by a full-bodied, dense, and thrillingly concentrated wine that has fresh acids, a seamless, surprisingly light and elegant texture, and masses of tannin that emerge on the finish. The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin rivals the 2007 Chaupin (to date the best Chaupin I have yet tasted). Made from 100% Grenache (3/4 destemmed), it boasts a dense black/purple color as well as unbelievable notes of raspberries, black cherries, licorice, truffles, camphor, forest floor and garrigue. This wine is stunningly concentrated, incredibly noble, precise and expansive on the palate with mouth-saturating intensity, glycerin and extract. It is an amazing example of impeccably grown old vine Grenache translated into a natural yet full-throttle red. (RP)

Glass-staining ruby. Heady scents of raspberry liqueur, cherry-cola, Asian spices and potpourri, with a bright mineral overtone. Juicy, incisive and pure, offering vibrant black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a suave spicecake nuance. Completely stains the palate while showing superb energy and clarity. The gently tannic finish refuses to let go and strongly echoes the raspberry and floral notes. (JR)

Densely textured and sappy in feel, with bright, engaging fruit and red and black currant, raspberry and blackberry notes all coursing along, pushed by a graphite spine and backed by a fruitcake- and roasted apple wood-filled finish. Still tight, this will need some cellaring. (JM)

Notes

John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "(barrel) dark robe. Blackberry and blueberry lead fruit air with sensible filling in the bouquet – this can become varied and stylish. The second fruit air is prune – ie ripeness. Enclosed, compact black fruit on the palate runs clearly, has cut. It persists well. It is reserved in all its youth. The fruit also runs across the palate, is juicy without undue flamboyance. It ends nice and coolly, and is balanced." (12/2011)
