2000 Krug "Clos du Mesnil" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

Wine Spectator
Review Date: 11/2014*Collectibles* Silky and fine like featherweight cashmere, this vibrant blanc de blancs is nonetheless laden with ample, expressive flavors. Rich hints of XO cognac and coffee liqueur underscore bergamot and glazed apricot fruit, while smoky minerality, spun honey, grilled nut and exotic spices impart further complexity and linger on the lasting finish. Disgorged spring 2012. Drink now through 2030. (AN)

Vibrant yellow-gold. Smoke- and mineral-accented pear and Meyer lemon on the deeply scented nose, with notes of ginger, vanilla bean and white flowers adding complexity and lift. Sappy, deeply pitched orchard and pit fruit flavors are braced by juicy acidity, picking up sweet butter and anise nuances with air. Chewy and mineral-driven, with superb clarity and slow-building spiciness. An exotic touch of iodine emerges on the finish, which shows outstanding focus and toasty persistence. The combination of power and energy here is really impressive. (JR)

Just beginning to show the early signs of evolution in its color and flavors, the 2000 Clos du Mesnil is in an in between spot where it is ideally cellared for at least another few years, after which it is likely to remain at a plateau of maturity for many, many years. Smoke, crushed rocks, dried pears, spices and chamomile all add nuance as the wine gradually opens up in the glass. (AG)

This is a challenging wine, a blond Valkyrie demanding attention, with enough complexity drawn from a single vintage and a single site to make the head spin. Is it oxidative in its note of caramel, or mineral in its earthen power? Almost absurdly tight for a 2000 Champagne—and intensely rich—this needs another ten years to relax.

The iconic all-Chardonnay Clos du Mesnil comes from a four and a half acre walled vineyard in the super-chalky grand cru village of Mesnil. It was known as the Clos Tarin, owned by the Tarin sisters. It had always been famous for its quality, but now as a single vineyard wine by one of Champagne’s most quality obsessed houses, it has become one of the most desirable bottles in the whole appellation. I drank this with Margareth Henriquez, Krug's CEO at Quattro restaurant in the Four Seasons hotel, and it was paired with the appetizers. The lobster crudo brought out the white fruit of the chardonnay, while the duck and Taleggio poppers showed off the razor cut of this no-malolactic Mesnil masterpiece. The best pairing of all was with the pancetta wrapped bay scallops, giving me a glimpse of the richness this wine has in store for the patient. I can count the number of times I have had Clos du Mesnil on one hand, and feel lucky to be able to say that! This pure Chardonnay expression, from a house whose other wines are dominated by black fruit always shows plenty of Krug style, while also revealing the chalky minerality of one of the greatest sites on the planet.
Notes
From Mesnil's famous walled vineyard, this incomparable all-Chardonnay Champagne is one of the world's great wines! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
