2011 Erste e Neue Lagrein Alto Adige Rosato
Review Date: 07/2012
Erste Neue’s Lagrein Rose is quite distinctive. It seems calmer, deeper--a mature, less rambunctious rose, neither frivolous nor self consciously pretty. The floral spice angle contrasts nicely with a crunchy berry notion, something like a compromise between cranberry and cherry. The fruit never dominates, however, and it finishes clean and dry. A compelling alternative to the familiar rose favorites that's well worth checking out.

Notes
Erste e Neue is a highly revered co-op located high up in the Mediterranean Alps in the Alto Adige region of Northeast Italy, where it is primarily famous for producing racy, refreshing, and mineral-driven white wines from the varietals that thrive there. Lagrein is a relatively rare red grape indigenous to Alto Adige which is the offspring of the ancient variety Teroldego. The Oxford Companion to wine describes Lagrein as producing a "fragrant and sturdy" rosato, and we couldn't agree more.
