Reviewed December 2013Montevertine’s 2009 Montevertine dazzles from the very first taste. Montevertine is sometimes overlooked in favor of the flagship Pergole Torte, but that is a mistake, as I have learned over the years. The 2009 jumps from the glass with sweet rose petals, red berries, mint, licorice and spices. Is it ready to drink? Of course the 2009 is far too young to be fully mature, but it is still a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. (AG)

Decanter
Proprietor Martino Manetti calls 2009 a great year but believes its disadvantage was coming before the highly-rated 2010. He compares it to 2006. Indeed the Montevertine is a finessed and elegant wine with remarkable acidity. It has softened with age and exudes an alluring sweetness of wild berries with a sprinkling of cinnamon and a stony, mineral-like through-line. (MM)

Int'l Wine Cellar
Bright, full ruby. Restrained aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, licorice and black pepper; conveys a distinctly rocky, mineral aspect. Juicy and creamy sweet, with very pure flavors of raspberry and licorice pastille. Intense but not particularly sweet, with the licorice quality complemented by a strong mineral tang. Finishes quite firm and very long. This is a very serious, outstanding Montevertine. (IA)
Notes
This is the flagiship wine of this esteemed producer in Chianti, located about equidistant from Florence and Siena. There are 18 hectares of vineyards that make up the Montevertine estate, planted mostly to Sangiovese with small amounts of Colorino and Canaiolo, the latter of which makes up about 10% of this wine. Aged for 24 months in large Slavonian casks. From an excellent vintage, this a great follow-up to the 2008, which was awarded two glasses by Gambero Rosso as well 92 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator.
