Paul Bara "Réserve" Brut Grand Cru Champagne
91
Burghound
Review Date: 10/2019A discreet but nicely layered nose speaks of brioche, citrus, pear liqueur and a whiff of white flowers. The bold, rich and full-bodied flavors are supported by a generous but not aggressive mousse before culminating in a crisp, delicious and yeasty finish. This is not an elegant effort but to Bara's credit, the use of the term 'Réserve' is warranted as there is evident complexity along with the seductive mouth feel that comes with age.

The NV Brut Grand Cru Reserve is a wonderfully elegant wine graced with layers of perfumed fruit that come to life on a mid-weight frame. The wine shows terrific balance and tons of Bouzy character, with a long, and refined finish that invites a second taste. This bottle was disgorged in June, 2009 although that is not indicated on the label. The NV Brut Grand Cru Reserve is a gem from Bara.

A creamy Champagne, offering concentrated flavors of mandarin orange preserves, dried white cherry and grated ginger, underscored by a streak of salty mineral. Well-balanced, with a lip-smacking finish. Disgorged December 2019. (AN)

The NV Brut Réserve is a fine introduction to the range. Soft, open-knit and welcoming, the Brut Réserve is a total delight. Pear, dried flowers, spice and plum all grace this understated, mid-weight offering from Paul Bara. Lifted floral overtones extend the finish nicely. Disgorged: January 2024. (AG)

Email DianaAn exceptional value for fans of Bouzy Pinot Noir, Paul Bara’s Réserve Brut Champagne exemplifies the rich, powerful style for which this Grand Cru village is best known. In fact, Paul Bara himself wrote the history of Bouzy, and his tiny production (10,000 cases) is all top quality fruit. His daughter Chantal is making the wines now, and her deft winemaking style stays true to Paul’s vision. This release is 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, and shows bright berry fruit on the nose with a tight, racy core of acidity. This is a food-pairing dream, with enough body to stand up to heavier, less traditional choices and a brightness that keeps it light enough on its feet to be served as an aperitif. Stunning.
