A complete shock to everyone who tasted this blind at La Trouvaille. Tasted alongside Lynch Bages '66, a little fatter on the nose with notes of cedar and cooked meats. Good poise and freshness. The palate has good depth, smooth tannins and quite vivacious. Full of life and vigour. Where does the concentration come from? Who cares - a wine that stuck two fingers up at all its critics who have ever dismissed this wine. (NM)

Notes

The 1980 Mouton Rothschild label features the work of French-German artist Hans Hartung. Always in the forefront of the greatest wines of Bordeaux, Mouton Rothschild was the first estate to begin complete chateau-bottling of the harvest — a historic step initiated in 1924 by the late Philippe de Rothschild. It is the only château in the Classification of 1855 to achieve reclassification as a First Growth.
