Burghound

Review Date: 01/2014

A markedly ripe yet agreeably fresh nose of lightly spiced and distinctly floral aromas of earthy red currant, menthol, cassis and humus. There is outstanding richness to the round and admirably concentrated big-bodied flavors that display an evident muscularity as well as an abundance of dry extract that stains the palate and pushes the firm tannic spine to the background on the explosively long and overtly austere finish. This is a serious 2009 that will require at least 15 years of cellar time.

Vinous

Review Date: 01/2019
Less detailed on the nose than the 2010, but still with a subtle soil character to the aromas of dried flowers, mocha, mint, licorice and spices. A more powerful, savory style than the '10 but less expressive and delineated at this point; can't quite match the younger vintage for treble notes but there's plenty of energy here, not to mention a fine-grained texture and serious stuffing. Finishes suave, classically dry and long... (ST)

Notes

95 points, Stephen Tanzer for Vinous: "Deep nose shows an almost roasted ripeness but also terrific lift to the aromas of black cherry, flowers, licorice, mint, wild herbs and orange peel. Like liquid velvet on entry, then highly concentrated but youthfully unforthcoming in the middle. This extremely long, palate-staining wine has the tannic force and balance to evolve in bottle for decades. Should be a cellar classic with time." (3/2012)
