1997 Le Macchiole "Paleo" Bolgheri Rosso Superiore
92
Wine Advocate
Review Date: 10/2001Promising is the 1997 Paleo Rosso, an unfined, unfiltered, barrique-aged blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Its opaque ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of licorice, smoke, graphite, blackberries, and cassis. Full-bodied, with a roasted meat character to its flavors, extraordinary purity and concentration, and beautifully integrated acidity as well as tannin, this blockbuster is a candidate for drinking now, or cellaring for 15-17 years. This is a prodigious wine. It is a shame quantities are so limited. (RP)

Notes
Founded in 1983 in Bolgheri by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole is one of Tuscany’s most pioneering estates, known for redefining the region’s potential for single-varietal wines. The winery’s meticulous organic farming and minimal-intervention philosophy highlight the elegance and individuality of its coastal terroir. The 1997 Paleo Rosso, originally a Cabernet Sauvignon before evolving into a pure Cabernet Franc, captures Le Macchiole’s signature style — refined and expressive, with ripe dark fruit, herbal nuance, and the poise that helped put Bolgheri on the global fine-wine map.
