Coiled and reserved at first, smoky cigar box as it opens, vivid and beautifully sleek blackcurrant, bilberry and blueberry fruits, taut and structured tannins even at 14 years old, with pencil lead and olive paste studding the palate from beginning to end. Plenty of estate signature in its finessed spirit, coupled with the concentration and swagger of the 2010 vintage. Harvest September 22 to October 14. Denis Dubourdieu consultant, Gabriel Vialard winemaker. 60% new oak for ageing.

The 2010 Château Haut-Bailly is based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 50% new French oak. It's a powerhouse of an Haut-Bailly that still brings incredible purity, precision, and elegance. Spicy currants, loamy earth, graphite, cigar, and savory floral notes all define the aromatics, and it's concentrated, has full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mid-palate, and ultra-fine tannins. It's a singular, sensational wine from this team that's just now at the early stages of its prime drinking window. It needs an hour in a decanter if drinking anytime soon and has another 40-50 years of overall longevity. Drink 2025-2065.

Great aromas of crushed blackberries with flowers and stones that follow through to a full body, with super silky tannins and a long, long finish. It fills your mouth with beautiful fruit and velvety tannins yet shows tension and form. This lasts for minutes on the palate. Structured and superb. Don't touch until 2020.

Deep plum/purple, Haut-Bailly’s 2010 required some coaxing to appreciate its subtle notes of barbecue smoke, lead pencil shavings and creme de cassis as well as its touches of pomegranate and forest floor. The oak is pushed far into the background and the tannins are extremely silky, but the intensity of the wine is profound and the finish lingers for close to 55 seconds. This wine is ripe yet delicate, powerful yet stylish, and essentially resembles a remarkable fashion design from a house of haute couture. This wine needs a good 7-8 years of bottle age and should keep for 40-50+ years. (RP)

Email AlexAsk any seasoned Bordeaux drinker about Pessac Leognan and the one thing that's sure to come up is the minerals. As mysterious and unbelievable as it is for the flavor of the gravelly soil and white quartz to travel through the roots and the veins into the grapes, I beseech you to smell this wine. Yes, it has the dark currants, the potent violets, licorice and smoke of great Cabernet Sauvignon, but it also has an unmistakable and unique stony earthy aroma that is totally complementary to every other flavor present. It has an incredible balance that seems to highlight every corner and nuance of the wine, with nothing overpowering anything else. This is a testament to the unmatchable terroir of this top Pessac Leognan property.

Email JeffA veritable maestro of a wine, deftly bringing together all of the powerful, disparate elements of the vintage in perfect harmony to produce a great red. Classic minerality. Ripe, sweet red fruits. Very bright and fresh in character. Terrific length and concentration. A supremely polished effort, and my pick for one of the wines of the vintage.
