With its richness and great density of flavor, this is always a great Champagne. This 1999 is rounder than some vintages, less mineral, while still retaining the balance between white fruit and toast. It is still young, still tightly textured and ageworthy over several years. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

The first vintage of chef de cave Dominique Petit, the 1999 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is an especially rich, generous rendition of this bottling. Revealing aromas of buttered toast, sweet stone fruits, orange confit, iodine and pastry cream, it's full-bodied, fleshy and gourmand, with a broad attack and a layered core of sweet fruit, concluding with a long, saline finish. This, too, is drinking at its peak today, and once again there's no reason to delay gratification. (WK)

Pale yellow-gold. Deep, pungent nose offers an array of orchard and citrus fruit qualities, along with notes of iodine, minerals and toasty lees. Chewy and impressively concentrated, with excellent clarity to its pear and orange flavors. The toasty quality gains strength with air and carries through an impressively long, spicy, floral finish. Very impressive, especially for a release from what is widely considered a so-so vintage for Champagne. (JR)

Subtle, with hints of ripe apple, almond paste, white peach and honey. There's a smoky mineral baseline, and though well-integrated the acidity is lightly chalky on the fine-grained palate. (AN)

Notes

From Jancis Robinson's notes: "This was made in the 150th anniversary of Pol Roger and represents a fine celebration. Very firm and dense, probably best kept for a few months (I tasted it on release in the UK). That said, the haunting nose filled the room as soon as the cork was popped. Solid food wine. I honestly think it would be wasted poured at a busy reception; it needs some contemplation. Still quite chewy on the finish. Very persistent. All grand cru vineyards that were under vine during Winnie's lifetime. Very much Pinot-dominant. Supposedly only 1,200 bottles made. Almost a Champagne to have with a cigar, appropriately enough. This was the first vintage of their de luxe Champagne made by the new team at Pol Roger." (02/2010)
