This deep, coral-colored sparkling wine lets you know right up front that it is to be taken seriously. Apple-juice aromas mingle with hints of petrol, toffee and caramelized onion. Those savory notes develop further on the palate, with a rich, teriyaki-like flavor that’s brightened up with apple and a hint of cranberry. At this price, you can keep a bottle of this handy to pair with any meal life throws at you, or just to enjoy on its own, to savor all of its nuances. (LS)

Love everything about Rose Champagne except the price? I have the perfect solution for you, drink Pierre Sparr Cremant d'Alsace Brut Rose which at more than 50% off most Roses from Champagne gives you an almost identical experience. Sour cherry, spice, red licorice and subtle red flower aromas greet you on the nose while the palate is fresh and bright with cherry, red licorice and spice notes all intertwined perfectly against a brisk backdrop of acidity and verve. Surprisingly complex and full-bodied this a wonderful Rose that you can afford to drink more often.

Although I do specialize in Champagne, sometimes I do need to buy a bubbly in quantity that won't break the bank. This little Alsatian gem has a red fruited nose with dominant cherry fruit, followed by strawberry and minerals. A wonderful creaminess and heady mousse make it a pleasure to drink. It has a nice finish of minerals and cream. Don't report me to the Comte Champagne!

This amazing value starts with high toned aromas and flavors of Bing Cherry and sweet cranberry that carry right through the full, creamy and frothy middle. There is a wonderful sweet/tart counterpoint on the bracing finish. A well made over-achiever.

Notes

The Sparr winery has more than a little experience making wine in Alsace, having been founded by Jean Sparr back in the ’80s—the 1680s. Nine successive generations have labored to maintain and expand the family's wine estate. In more recent news, young Pierre Sparr, aged 20, assumed responsibilities for the winery in the early twentieth century. With a forward-thinking motto of “invest, progress, and maintain,” Pierre became a pioneer in estate bottling in Alsace. He maintained a sense of determination through World War II, and rebuilt his family’s beautiful domaine after a protracted battle between U.S. and German forces destroyed his village of Sigolsheim and its vineyards in late 1944. Today, Maison Pierre Sparr farms 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyards and sources fruit from another 150 hectares (370 acres) farmed by growers who share their philosophy. One exciting new change at Pierre Sparr is the elevation of Alexandra Boudrot to the position of cellar master. Alexandra has worked in Alsace for 12 years and has a degree in winemaking from the University of Dijon. She grew up in Nuits-St-Georges and has a passion for organic and sustainable farming. The wines of Pierre Sparr represent some of the best values in Alsace.
