Redbreast 12 year old is a classic pure pot still Irish whiskey; where can you go from there? This new 15 year old expression is more muscular (bottling at 46% and not chill filtering certainly helps), but there are trade-offs. It’s a bit closed on the nose (like a great Bordeaux wine that’s too young). I do enjoy the silky/oily texture, the bold resinous oak spice grip on the finish, and the rich nutty toffee, fig, black raspberry, chocolaty, chewy nougat throughout the palate. (JH, Winter 2010)

Made with a combination of malted and unmalted barley, this 15-year-old builds on the beautiful flavors of the 12-year-old version, adding big, mouth-filling caramel tones, a spicy finish and a velvety feel. It’s also higher proof than the 12-year-old and needs some dilution to help cool it down. (KN)

Redbreast is the quintessential Irish single pot still whiskey. If you're not familiar with single pot still whiskey, it's a category unto itself, like single malt or blended whiskey. It's made from malted and unmalted barley, mashed and distilled together on a pot still. It is a more robust and complex spirit than Irish grain or single malt alone and Redbreast is arguably the pinnacle of the genre. While the 12 year might be the most classic Irish whiskey ever produced, the 15 year steps everything up a notch. It's bottled at 46% ABV and non-chillfiltered, giving it a bigger presence and rich, oily texture. The nose is a complex set of berry fruit, sweet wood, and toasted spices. These flavors carry onto the palate in a big way and coat your mouth. The finish is long, clean, and sweet. If you're looking to explore the heights of Irish whiskey - Redbreast 15 is the best way to do it without breaking the bank.
