Domaine Boingnères Reserve Speciale Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

A blend of brandies aged five to ten years, Domaine Boingnères Reserve Speciale is made from Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc, and Colombard, and bottled at cask strength. A great example of how Armagnac doesn’t always mean dried fruit and sweet oak. Pure minerality and racy acidity take the lead here, with fresh fruit on the wonderfully long finish. (JW)

When is a non-vintage Armagnac worth the better part of $100? When it is this good... I was blown away by this, and I am desperate to buy a bottle for myself as soon as it returns to stock. This has it all; the rancio and suaveness of well aged brandy, the vinous savor and quiet hiss of fire that reminds one this is not Cognac and finally a peacock’s tail finish that swells long after you have set down your glass. This might not have the flash on the sideboard that a vintage of similar price has, but there is much more in the bottle than any other that we carry!

Notes

When discussing the components of a great brandy, the soil is just as important an indicator of quality as it is to a great wine. Boingnères grows all their fruit in a majority of sand and limestone, the absolute best makeup for producing fantastic grapes. Run by Martòn Lafite, of the esteemed Château Lafite family, the Domaine also owns their own still (rather than hiring someone to bring them a still like many producers do) so they have been familiar with the workings of their distillation for decades. The aromas of the Reserve Speciale are full of new wood with rich fruit lying underneath it. A blend of Folle Blanche and Colombard, the spirit is less than 10 years old, but at 48% abv has only been slightly reduced with water. The palate has loads of creamy fruit with a finish of mocha and orange peel. It is the definitive Armagnac for the true connoisseur, on the list of the best Michelin-starred restaurants in France.
