2005 is one of the best recent vintages from Bordeaux, and this Haut Medoc from Chateau Verdignan represents not only some of the best value from that vintage but from all of Bordeaux. This wine is medium-bodied and smooth, with notes of dark fruit, oak, and leather. The finish is long and elegant, driven by velvety tannins that have benefited from 20 years of age.

At twenty years of age, the 2005 Verdignan reveals a beautifully mature bouquet of old leather, cedar, and dried blackcurrant. The palate is wonderfully resolved and elegant, with silky tannins that carry complex flavors of cigar box and forest floor. A core of stewed plum provides a touch of remaining fruit, which is perfectly integrated with savory notes of dried herbs and graphite. All the components are in perfect harmony, showcasing the grace and poise that can only come from extended cellaring.

I love this claret! Plenty of savory dark red fruit, mocha and licorice with earthy elements of graphite, forest floor and mushrooms. 2005 was not a shy vintage, nor are the flavors in this wine. The tannins and acid are right where they need to be, I’d take advantage of the sub-$20 price tag and enjoy this tonight!​
